Canberra’s biggest design and craft festival, DESIGN Canberra has announced the full program for their new program ‘Nurture’, which will be held from 5-28 November instead of the annual festival this year.

Drawing on the well documented benefits of creativity to support wellbeing, Nurture is aimed at supporting Craft ACT members and the Canberra community during this difficult time. The program will focus on the wellbeing of creativity, creating as a tool for health and recovery, and as an antidote to the impact and stress of the pandemic. It also will provide and expand opportunities for artists to develop their skills and work, make connections and present their craft.

“After the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 DESIGN Canberra festival, the Craft ACT team has responded with optimism and persistence to the many challenges that 2021 has thrown us – we are finding new ways to support our members and our community and deliver on our mission: To embed contemporary craft, making and design at the centre of everyday life in Australia’s capital, a global city of design,” says CEO of Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre, and Artistic Director of DESIGN Canberra, Jodie Cunningham.

“We are so excited to use the tools we know best, creativity, design thinking; and making as ways to help our community heal and transition out of lockdown.”

Some highlights of Nurture include:

  • Mindful making workshops to learn creative techniques
  • Craft + Design auction of experimental, small scale and one-off pieces
  • Thrive: professional development online workshops for makers
  • Creative journaling month challenge
  • Friday crafter-noon’s every week at Craft ACT Gallery
  • Exhibitions showcasing over 70 contemporary craft and design artists
  • Studio stories via virtual interviews and studio tours with the makers
