A pirate parrot, a giant soccer ball and the famous Skywhale will brighten up the capital’s skies this autumn as part of the annual Canberra Balloon Spectacular.
The iconic event will return to Canberra for its 28th year from Saturday 8 March until Sunday 16 March.
More than 30 giant hot air balloons from as far as China and the United States will participate in this year’s event, launching daily from 6.00am on the lawns of Old Parliament House against the distinctive backdrop of Canberra’s national attractions.
Special shapes set to feature in this year’s event include Peg Leg Pete – The Pirate Parrot, the Airball – a giant soccer ball celebrating Canberra’s involvement in the AFC Asian Cup 2015, and the famous Skywhale – the Centenary of Canberra project supported by the ACT government.
New Zealand pilot Andrew Parker will also bring the UNICEF balloon to Canberra as part of the Flying High for Kids World Balloon Project, which aims to raise awareness and funds for the international aid organisation.
Events ACT General Manager Neale Guthrie said the event was one not to be missed. “After 28 years this fantastic event is still a wonderful community celebration with free, live entertainment each morning and delicious hot breakfasts served by the Belconnen Lions Club for the early risers,” he said.
“All proceeds raised by the Belconnen Lions Club – including last year’s record amount of $40,000 – go back to the Canberra community.”
