A chatterbox typically has a lot to say, and after visiting Belconnen’s latest coffee shop, there’s certainly plenty to talk about. From the bright colours of the interior and roar of the busy coffee machine, through to the energetic and friendly banter of the staff, Chatterbox Espresso bar has the feeling of being very much a living and breathing café.

Part of this energy is from the space itself – with a striking contrast of yellow, black and white throughout. The sounds of a relaxed and happy breakfast crowd fills the space on the weekends – distinct from the busy coffee-and-sandwich trade that has warmly embraced Chatterbox since opening late last year with its compelling mix of service, speed and quality.

There’s plenty on offer for those keen to enjoy some breakfast and, with a little more time to spend on the weekend, it’s a great opportunity to kick back and sample some of the delights from the well-constructed menu.

The Potato Stack provides a temptation too good to resist, and the towering pile on the plate makes eyes widen as it arrives. The potato rosti is light and fluffy with a beautifully caramelised outer, while the cottage cheese brings a creamy element to the plate. On a warm summer’s morning, the salmon option works beautifully with the hint of spring onion adding some tang.

Eggs Benedict has its rumoured history in late 19th century hangovers, and as such is a timeless dish, and here you can have yours with salmon, bacon, ham or spinach (the classic Florentine variation). It’s a favourite around the world, and, while you may consider it familiar, The Chatterbox ‘Eggs Benny’ has an edge…

The eggs!

What really caught our attention about the Benedict (and the Potato Stack) was the quality of the eggs. Is there anything better than running a knife through a freshly poached egg, only to reveal an intense orange yolk? The free-range eggs used by Chatterbox Espresso are another indication of a desire to provide quality product at a very reasonable price.

And again, it’s the same for the Chatterbox Baked Eggs. Leaving aside the sensational combination of spiced mince lamb, onion and herb-infused tomato sauce, the eggs are brilliant. You’d do very well to find such quality ingredients sold elsewhere at the price. Only one dish across the menu is priced over $15.00.

As you might expect, home-made muesli, fruit plates and French toast are all available, rounding out a great menu that contains classics with more than enough exciting twists and turns to keep even die-hard breakfast diners entertained. Oh, and we haven’t even mentioned the consistently silky smooth coffee.

Chatterbox is open 7 days a week, and even on public holidays. The great news is you don’t even have to hesitate – you know the café will be open and ready to turn on its many charms, no matter what day of the year.

When out-and-about on the Northside, at Chatterbox Espresso you can be assured of a great coffee and a delicious breakfast. Now that’s something to talk about!
