I hear the word coat and immediately think Robert Redford in 3 Days of the Condor. The film isn’t one of my favourites but Redford’s style is iconic and unquestionable. This week I’m listing six ways to dress for the winter chill day and night – that isn’t a puffer jacket!

Referencing Robert Redford’s timeless style this pea coat by Yves Saint Laurent proves that some pieces will stand the test of time and never go out of style. Worth the investment; this coat is neatly tailored in Italy from black virgin wool and features minimal detailing for a clean-lines profile that will suit almost any ensemble. The waist length fit will work over a suit for work during the day but can be dressed down with jeans over the weekend or on a night out. Available online from Mr Porter for express delivery.

Another piece from Mr Porter this elegant Salle Privee overcoat available in camel is a perfect hue for versatility. The shade will match almost any colour combination you can think of throwing together and has a way of pulling together a casual look and giving it a smarter sense. Working with blue jeans or navy suits day or night it’s a great piece with an all-black everything base ensemble paired with a beanie and smart loafers. This coat is made from a wool blend that is brushed for extra softness, a perfect blend of fashion and comfort.

I’m all about patterns this winter. This Houndstooth coat with a lapel collar and long sleeves from Zara features two front pockets, lining with an inside pocket and button fastening in the front and gives a British fashion vibe working best with red and navy tones. Very affordable and available online at Zara Australia or in store at The Canberra Centre.

This Water-repellent coat made the list not because of its heaviness and warmth like many of the others. It’s a mid-weight coat formed by a technical twill and cotton by BOSS menswear. Styled with a three button fastening and notch lapels and treated with a water-resistant finish for dependable protection from the elements all year round. The coat is cut with a smooth lining to ensure it will glide effortlessly over a suit which makes it ideal for travel between work and home during the week. Available in several colours; my pick being the timeless beige for year round versatility. Available online and at Hugo Boss on Bunda Street, Civic.

For when you want your outfit to match the skyline. This grey number from Country Road avoids the typical use of great wool in men’s coats and combines tones of greys through a lush tweed texture. Tailored in a premium Merino wool tweed woven by the famed British mill; Abraham Moon & Sons. Again this coat lands in the more versatile range of the colour spectrum when trying to coordinate it with day-wear looks, styled best with a crisp white shirt tucked in.

For my next recommendation we look to UK label Reiss who provide us with the Pangea coat. In terms of trend pieces exposed fleece has made a huge resurgence since autumn. I’d be remiss in not including it in our list for the more on-trend, fashion forward male readers. Manufactured from a durable wool based blend with a quilted lining and sporting double breasted buttons it’s hard to overlook the statement about this piece; the fleece collar. While we can’t be sure if this will be a coat for every winter we can be sure it will always keep you warm. Available online it ships directly to your door for your convenience.
