Another Friday night – and another awesome performance at Academy Nightclub. Canberra’s favourite nightclub brings some of the best music acts in Canberra and in Australia, and this week we had the pleasure hosting Elizabeth Rose – singer, DJ and producer. Her music is a great exploration into the Australian club music scene and it was a privilege to have her perform at Academy.

Before the big act of Elizabeth Rose, her opening act pumped up the crowd. Local darlings SAFIA brought a cosmic energy to Academy and prepared the audience for a night of loud and fun electronic music, performing their latest single Paranoia, Ghosts and other Sounds, showing the growth and strength of the great Canberran band.

Elizabeth Rose, though tiny in frame, has one killer voice. Her range is amazing and, after a few glitches with the technology, Elizabeth Rose stunned the audience with an array of electronic dance numbers. She played a lot of her new songs from her new album, giving us a taste of what is still to come from this pop rocket as well, as some of older stuff. Throughout the whole set Elizabeth had the crowd dancing and moving – even if they didn’t realise it was happening to them! With the red lights bouncing of the disco balls and hitting the crowd, the colour of ‘rose’ could be seen throughout the whole club.

The beauty of her music is there are two ways of listening to it. One, you get really into and do head flicks and dance like there is no one in the room. Or, two, you can just stand there and appreciate the moment like you’re the only person in the room. Her ability to make you feel alone – and yet smile – should be commended.

The versatility of Academy gigs is fantastic. They are appealing to everyone by getting in dance music one week and electronic the next, showing that clubs do not need to specialise in a specific genre or get stuck in a rut.

It was a fantastic night and, with the appearance of Trim on Friday 28 March and Tigerlily the following week, Academy is on a roll, with an energy that just keeps rising higher and higher.
