If this is the year you’ve finally decided to make the trip up to the snow and try skiing or snowboarding, we know it can be overwhelming and confusing. Lucky for you we’ve got the dummies guide that everyone needs to know before their first trip up to the Snowy Mountains.

  1. Avoid school holidays

With winter school holidays brings booked-out accommodation right through to Jindabyne, long lines for the lifts and crowded restaurants. If you can, avoid school holidays at all costs! It will make for a much more relaxing holiday.

  1. Hire ski rentals in Canberra

Hiring ski gear and rentals in Thredbo or Perisher can be expensive, especially if you’ve got a family. So make sure on your way out of the city you stop off at one of Canberra’s rental shops. For those who live near Belconnen, try Belconnen Ski n Board. Skis, boots and poles or snowboard, bindings and boots are just $57 for one day and $68 for kids including a jacket and pants. If you’re passing Fyshwick on the way, try Straight Line Sports for $50 for adults or $30 for kids for one day.

  1. Dinner bookings recommended!

The winter season gets a little crazy in the region, so make sure if you don’t have a kitchen at your accommodation or couldn’t possibly think of cooking after a day of skiing, you make a reservation at your chosen restaurant to avoid disappointment!

  1. Stop off at Rhythm in Cooma

Whether you’re in the market for new winter gear or not, you have to check out Rhythm Snowsports in Cooma. The biggest snow sports store in Australia, they have the best and latest in ski and snowboard gear and clothing, as well as winter jackets, pants, shoes, accessories and more!

  1. Don’t bring your dog

Those who are yet to venture to Kosciusko National Park might not be aware that there is a strict no pets policy. With an entry fee for every vehicle that’s heading to Thredbo or Perisher, don’t risk getting turned away!

  1. Pick up a bottle of schnapps from Wildbrumby

The perfect winter après drink, don’t drive past Wildbrumby Distillery without stopping for a bottle (or two) of schnapps. Open for lunch, if you’ve got time stop in for a hearty meal, or just head straight for the bottle shop. With delicious flavours like sour apple, raspberry, peach and butterscotch, put your legs up facing the fire and clink to a successful day.
