Reel Health, the world’s first health short film festival, is touring Australia!
They’re fast, they’re fresh and they’re full of heart: fifteen of the world’s most captivating health films will light up silver screens in Canberra as the inaugural Reel Health: International Health Short Film Festival rolls across the country from late November this year until the end of June, 2014.
Showcasing stories of courage and determination, the festival features films brimming with hope, laughter, friendship and survival. Each short was hand-picked from 49 entries to Reel Health, the world’s first health short film competition. Reel Health was founded by Monash Health earlier this year. The festival aims to reduce stigma and to open up conversations about health topics that are often difficult to discuss.
Inspiring and thought-provoking, the Reel Health films communicate personal stories and provide a launching pad for discussions about community health issues. They capture the real-life hardships and triumphs encountered by people living with conditions such as deafness, blindness, mental illness, dementia, endometriosis, sclerosis and head injuries. They explore provocative topics such as female genital circumcision with honesty; they frankly delve into issues such as the need to provide more health services to remote communities; and they engage with topics such as social isolation and loneliness, with sincerity and humour.
“This Festival is about the reality of the health industry, not the Hollywood version. I have worked in the health industry for more than 35 years and I am still waiting to meet George Clooney in an emergency department, Ms Doherty said. “In my world, Dr House would be deregistered and probably imprisoned.”
