For me, the hardest part about going out is deciding what to wear. It’s a challenge that becomes a million times more difficult when going out on a date. My mind goes into overdrive and, even if I know where I’m going, I always second guess myself as I try to figure out whether or not I’m underdressed (bad) or overdressed (worse).

Obviously, the most important thing on a first date is to just be yourself and wear something that you feel comfortable in. After all, as Rachel Zoe once said, “Style is a way to say who you are, without having to speak.” With that in mind, here is what I would wear on a date, depending on the time of day, to show a bit more personality.

Morning Coffee Date
You really can’t go wrong with the ol’ jeans-and-tee look, especially if your date is happening in the morning, when you can get away with wearing something a bit more on the casual side. Slouchy t-shirts + dainty jewellery = the perfect match.

Spring has almost sprung here in Canberra so I would ditch the dark colours and instead opt for greys, whites and pastel pops of colour. The mornings are getting warmer so roll up those jeans and leave the socks in the drawer!

Afternoon Lunch
Orange is the new black, quite literally. The fiery hue has been all over the ready-to-wear shows this Spring. Why not go bold with a strappy orange number? Alternatively you could incorporate the trend into your makeup look for the afternoon with a bright orange lip.

Evening Dinner-And-A-Movie
Two words: Midi skirt.

Lately I’ve been seeing so many people rocking the midi-skirt around town and I think it’s definitely going to be the closet must-have for this Spring/Summer. Also, stripes. What is it about them that is so very chic?

This ensemble would suit a night out seeing a film at the Palace Electric Cinema, followed by dinner at one of the many restaurants in the city, and perhaps an end of the night romantic stroll along Lake Burley Griffin.

The Boys
For any male readers, your job is pretty easy. Follow these three simple rules and your outfit will make a great impression: 1) Fitted pants. 2) Button up shirt with a collar, and 3) Absolutely, under no circumstances whatsoever, are thongs acceptable footwear for a date!
