Smoque Woden is here, and those south of the lake are unanimous in their joy at seeing the Favourite Restaurant in the OutInCanberra People’s Choice Awards (two years running!) opening its second outlet.

So what can you expect when heading to Canberra’s latest destination for delicious barbequed treats? Well, essentially it’s more of the same with a fresh new feel for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

Oh, and then there’s breakfast as well (but more of that shortly)

Smoque Woden is a bright open and sunny venue that captures the warmth of the sun in winter, while remaining protected from the elements in summer. There is a huge deck out the front, that is the perfect place to sit with a bunch of friends and share in Smoque’s expanded range of options.

Old favourites are here such as the Buffalo Hot Wings (available in regular, hot and ‘suicidal’ versions) and the wonderful blue cheese sauce, but there are a few new items as well. Feeling ravenous? Hit up the Double BBQ Bacon burger (yep – it’s as good as it sounds), which will leave delicious juices running down your forearms and a big silly grin on your face.

But, yes… the breakfast.

When Smoque does breakfast, you can bet it’s every bit as ludicrous and amazing as an American breakfast can be. For example, the Benny Hill – an incredible take on Eggs Benedict, but with an attitude bigger than Texas. As one of the Signature Waffles you need to reassess from what you’d normally expect this to be. Forget ‘Nanna’s’ brand waffles that are barely bigger than a Post-it note, Smoque’s waffles seem almost as big as the plate they’re carried on.

Add to this two poached eggs (check!), Hollandaise Sauce (yep!) and… fried chicken (!) and you’ve got a surprising, fun and delicious breakfast with flavours that are perfectly balanced. You simply have to try it.

For something a little more restrained, check out the Loco Moco. While it sounds crazy, this is in fact an interpretation of a Hawaiian dish – and represents a cuisine we rarely get to explore in Australia. A combination of rice, a burger patty, chicken gravy and fried eggs, it’s a much more savoury offering than what one might typically expect from American breakfasts, but is rich and filling thanks to the rice and chicken gravy.

So, breakfast is certainly worth checking out!

For those that are keen for experimenting on the Weber at home, you can also buy a range of spice rubs and sauces to take away with you. Perfect for marinating and preparing your meat for a Saturday evening at home, it takes a lot of the prep out of cooking great meat.

Also, you can buy sauces for the Buffalo Hot Wings. Will you be brave enough to try the suicidal version?
