As one of the greatest pioneers of Rock and Roll in the late 50s, Buddy Holly had a career spanning only two years before his tragic death, but his music continues to have an impact on popular music. His career will be brought to life in the new show, Buddy The Concert, about to tour the country.

The show follows Buddy and his band on their journey from teenagers in high school onto the professionals that they became, and stars 23-year-old Scott Cameron, one of the most recognised Buddy Holly performers in the world.

Although Cameron was born long after Buddy’s time, he’s carefully perfected his Buddy impersonation, including his unique hiccup singing style, and has been fortunate enough to meet people who grew up with the man himself.

“I got the chance to meet the real Peggy Sue that the song was written about when she came out to Australia for the opening of Buddy in 2009,” says Cameron.

“I also met Bob Montgomery who wrote the song Heartbeat and was in the first band with Buddy Holly before the Crickets. So it was very interesting to meet people who actually grew up with him and had a different impression of what he was like.”

This isn’t the first time Cameron will take to the stage as Buddy, having previously toured in The Buddy Holly Story.

“I used to have long hair, and I was stuck in the 80’s playing that sort of music. It was actually the song Peggy Sue that I fell in love with as a kid and when I grew up, I realized after I cut my hair that, ‘Holy crap, I look like Buddy Holly!’.

From there, Cameron auditioned for a role in The Buddy Holly Story, and after landing the lead role, he’s taken to the stage as his idol ever since.

“It’s strange, I’ve been a songwriter and won awards, and they were great experiences and fun, but I’ve never had as much fun as I do putting on those glasses and pretending to be somebody else,” he laughs.

“I love it – I have more fun playing Buddy than myself!”

Buddy The Concert is showing at Canberra Theatre Centre on Saturday 20th August 2011, at 8:00pm. Tickets $55 from www.canberratheatrecentre.com.au
