This weekend sees the running of the 41st running of the Seppelt Black Opal Stakes at Thoroughbred Park – and Canberra has a long weekend to celebrate! We’ve put together the definitive guide for Canberra’s biggest racing meet with everything you need to prepare yourself for a day at the track.

The Racing
On Sunday, the gates open at 11.30am for those keen to get in and secure the best spot from which to watch the day’s racing. There will be a full program of eight races with the first due to jump around 1.00pm.

Feel like treating yourself to an extra special day at the races? Grab yourself a table on Picnic Place and settle in with your own table and umbrella that seats up to six people. Plus, you get access to a private bar where you can purchase drinks and avoid the queues! Click here to secure your spot now!

What to Wear
It’s going to be a little cooler this weekend (summer has definitely left us) so, ladies, be sure to bring a shawl or light jacket and wear a pair of stockings in case the breeze picks up. With a little bit of rain about this week, the ground might be a little soft underfoot, so be careful as you make your way across the lawns in those heels – opt for a pair of wedges to avoid any sinking!

Meanwhile, gentlemen, keep it simple and classic. Bring a hat (without your sunglasses!) and pay attention to cufflinks, collar stays and, importantly, your shoes. The golden rule is a simple one: if in doubt, ask someone who knows!

Fashions on the Field
Speaking of such things, The Myer Fashions of the Filed competition is accepting entries from midday with a massive $36,000 is cash and prizes to be won. Entrants are invited across three categories:
– Classic Ladies Racewear (1:15pm)
– Classic Mens Racewear (1:50pm)
– Classic Couples Racewear (3:00pm)

Emily Dibden, newly crowned as the 2014 Myer Face of Canberra Racing has the following advice for ladies keen to join in this year’s competition. “Choose an outfit that is on trend or classic. Off the rack dresses are great but you need to put your own design slant on it. Make sure your hair and makeup is immaculate and your accessories are complimentary to your outfit.”
