If your weekend plans don’t currently involve watching a parade of miniature sausage dogs dressed in ridiculous outfits waddling along the lake, you may want to rethink your priorities.

This Sunday, the annual World Dachshund Day walk is taking over the water’s edge, bringing together Canberra’s finest short-legged citizens and their humans for a morning of pure joy.

The Game Plan

The route is simple, scenic, and flat, which is ideal for so many little legs. The pack will gather at the National Carillon before making its way along the foreshore towards Commonwealth Park.

If you own a dachshund, you’re officially invited to join the ranks. If you don’t? You’re still more than welcome to stand on the sidelines, grab a coffee, and admire the passing parade.

Just make sure you leave enough room on the path, because steering an army of excited pups in a straight line is no easy feat.

Dress to Impress

The dress code for the day is delightfully extra. Owners are encouraged to deck their dogs out in their finest winter threads, from tiny knitted jumpers to custom costumes and possibly even a pair of doggy sunglasses.

Think of it as the Met Gala of Canberra’s pet world, but with significantly more tail-wagging.

Walking for the Locals

While the photo opportunities are going to be off the charts, there’s a much bigger reason to head down.

This year’s walk is raising crucial funds and awareness for the absolute legends at ACT Rescue & Foster (ARF), a Canberra-based volunteer organisation that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes dogs across the ACT and surrounding regions, placing them into loving foster homes while they wait to find their forever families.

So pack some gold coins, get your camera ready, and prepare for one of the most wholesome mornings Canberra has to offer.
