Celebrate the start of the festive season in the heart of the city with the official Lighting of the Christmas Tree.

Christmas cheer will flood Civic Square as Canberra celebrates with a great line up of entertainment, including popular children’s performers Lah-Lah’s Big Live Band, the Woden Valley Youth Choir and Santa Claus himself.

Come nightfall, the crowd will witness Canberra’s spectacular 21-metre high Christmas tree being lit.

The tree, which weighs more than five tonnes undecorated, is adorned with more than 200 baubles, 150 bells, 150 bauble clusters and 200 ribbons, and it takes approximately 220 man hours to construct.

Families can bring their own picnic to the Lighting of the Christmas Tree or purchase food and drink on site, and attendees are advised to bring along their own chairs and picnic rugs.

The Lighting of the Christmas Tree is supported by the local business community, in particular Prime7 Television, Mix 106.3, Accor Hotel Group and Eclipse Lighting and Sound.
