This Sunday, SnowyHydro SouthCare is hosting a fantastic event that allows Canberrans to take advantage of a summer’s day down by the lake.

Thanks to Moet & Chandon Champagne, Sunday by the Lake is a great chance to relax on a warm afternoon with a glass (or two) of bubbly, have a lovely brunch and let the afternoon sweep you away. With live music, DJs – Ashley Feraude, Stereotype, Jungle Jerry and Mr Michael with plenty of other local acts with plenty of room for kids to run around, it’s the perfect way to relax with friends before heading back to one of the last working weeks of the year.

There are plenty of options, the favourite proving to be Moet for Two – where, for $50 per person there will be a fantastic little brunch box served with a glass of the famous champagne. For the well-heeled, there are corporate packages available with all proceeds going to support the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Helicopter Service. As the afternoon rolls on, there will be plenty of food and drinks available from some of Canberra’s leading bars and restaurants – including Tongue & Groove and Ox Eatery. The good news is that beers and house wines are only $5.00 each all day. Bartenders from these Canberra spots will also be mixing up some speciality cocktails on the day. Fantastic!

Bocce!
Plus, there’s going to be a ‘knockout’-style Bocce tournament, where the weekend warrior will stride bravely barefoot onto the grass to discover the champion of the day. For the uninitiated, below are the basic rules. If you’re keen to test your skills in a a team of up to four players, be sure to email [email protected] and register your team’s name. It’s $20 per team, and all for a good cause!

Now, here’s how to play Bocce…

Decide Who Goes First
Toss a coin to see which side goes first. Simple!

Toss the Jack
Whichever team wins the toss, starts to game by tossing the jack into the game zone 5 metres in length, ending 2.5 metres from the end of the court.

Throw your balls
The team that set the jack throws the first ball. The aim is to have your team’s ball closest to the jack, therefore ‘holding the point’.

Once your ball has ceased moving it is the turn of the opposing team to throw their ball. It is the aim of the opposing team to land their balls closer to the jack in order to take the lead.

After each team has thrown one ball each, the team with their ball furthest away from the jack throws next, and this continues until one side has thrown all their balls. Any outstanding balls still held by the other team are then thrown to complete the game.

Should a ball hit the jack the game continues, with the closest ball to the jack’s new position now ‘holding the point’.

Scoring is similar to lawn bowls – that is, if your team has the two (or three) closest balls to the jack you will score two (or three) points.

The next round.
The winning team draws a circle around the final position of the jack. To reset for the next game, balls are returned to the end thrown from in the first game, the jack is reset by the leading team and the balls are.

The winner.

The game is won when a team reaches a total of 13 points. There is no set amount of rounds in which this must occur.

Buona fortuna! (good luck!)
