Queue Firework by Katy Perry, Skyfire is BACK and brighter than ever to light up your 2024, this Saturday, March 16th.

After a 5-year-long hiatus, Canberra’s favourite radio stations, Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3 have combined forces to bring back the beloved Skyfire. Since the first smallish Skyfire in 1989, the show has grown from 10,000 people to at least one-third of the ACT population gathering around Lake Burley Griffin. You’ve seen comedy shows, TV shows, dance performances, live music… but not often do you have the chance to see a fireworks show. The good news? Canberra doesn’t save fireworks for New Years.

We’re not talking a small show either, we’re talking 20 minutes of exhilarating explosions with over 40,000 effects, 2,500 shells and 25,000 shooting comets all set to a high-energy soundtrack played by Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3.

The 20-minute show will begin at 8:30 pm, but there’s plenty of reason to make a whole night of it. The team are pulling out all the stops, lighting up your evening with a Boeing E-7 Wedgetail Flyover, Australia’s Federation Guard Artillery Firing, Band of the Royal Military College and an epic lineup of live music across the main stage and Rond Terrace.  We recommend skipping dinner at home as 25 food trucks including Grease Monkey, the Tikka Stand and even Glowing Fairy Floss will be serving cracking eats.

And finally, here are a few insider tips from a seasoned Skyfire devotee:

  • Get there early to snag the prime position for you and your picnic rug
  • If you’re not keen to eat out, fill your picnic with a roast chook and rolls
  • Bring something cozy for if/when Canberra does the infamous sudden weather change
  • Wear comfy shoes for when the contagious music gets you in the mood for a boogie
  • Familiarise yourself with the road closures and parking options ahead of the night
