This Sunday, should you make your way down to Lake Burley Griffin, you may be fortunate enough to be surrounded by hundreds of very excited, very fluffy locals.

The RSPCA ACT is bringing the Canberra Paws Walk to the Patrick White Lawns this weekend, and it is shaping up to be the ultimate feel-good morning. Whether you have a highly energetic pup who needs to burn off some steam, or you just want to stroll along the water and pat every golden retriever in sight, this is where you want to be.

A Massive Lakeside Gathering

This isn’t just a standard loop around the lake. The lawns right in front of the National Library are being transformed into a massive dog-friendly festival from 9:00am. We are talking local food trucks, hot coffee to keep your hands warm, and over 40 market stalls to browse.

It’s the first time the event has been run as a uniquely Canberran celebration, designed by the local RSPCA team to bring dog lovers from both sides of the bridge together. Local musician Harry Carmen will be providing the soundtrack, while Wes and Hayley from AmplifyCBR keep things moving on the main stage.

Serious Fun and Scurrying Paws

If your dog has a hidden talent, you’ll want to stick around for the crowd-favourite competitions. They’ll be running rounds for Best Trick, Cutest Duo, and the highly competitive Waggliest Tail.

There is also a heap of interactive stuff to get involved in, including dog agility courses, dog painting, and “Poorly Drawn Pets” (which is exactly as hilarious as it sounds). Plus, the first 600 folks through the gates get to snag a free showbag.

Walking for a Real Cause

At 11:00am, the main walk kicks off along the edge of the lake. Followed by a special parade showcasing some of the gorgeous, adoptable dogs currently looking for their forever homes at the RSPCA shelter, alongside previously adopted rescue pups returning for a victory lap.

You can also check out Adoption Lane, which brings together the hard-working humans behind local rescue groups like the Canberra Street Cat Alliance, ACT Rescue and Foster, and the Rabbit Sanctuary.

Every single dollar raised from the event goes directly back into the community. Funding will go towards emergency pet boarding, subsidised veterinary care, desexing programs, and keeping the shelters running through the freezing winter months ahead.

Just a quick heads-up for those bringing their four-legged family members: this is strictly an on-lead, dog-only event. Keep them close, pack some treats, and get ready for a brilliant morning out.
