Penny University is an old Kingston café known for a combination of their adventurous creations and purveyors of fresh ingredients. It’s thanks to great cafés like this in Canberra that breakfast has migrated beyond its traditional timeslot and been made acceptable well into the arvo. The Penny University goodness is no longer reserved only for the morning crowd though, the café is launching a dinner event series called ‘Nights at Penny’ where they will embrace their sophisticated food offering in that same casual upbeat way we know them for.

In other words, they finally realised what us Penny fan girls knew all along – their food is good enough to eat all day and night. Starting this Friday 12 April 7pm, the team with be replacing their pre-midday menu with artfully arranged plates reserved for after dark events.

“The aim of the Nights a Penny menu is to showcase our eclectic approach to dishes, which draws ideas and techniques from all over the world and from fine-dining to home cooking,” Head Chef Alexander Siu says. “The menu, I hope, shows finesse, but is still fun and not so formal.”

Diners can expect four courses, each made with local produce and paired with a carefully selected award-winning wines from Mount Majura Vineyard. It’s a new take on the casual Penny fare you know and love, with a fine-dining twist.  The first in the Nights at Penny series will deliver a specially curated menu with house-made smoked beetroot panna cotta, cauliflower and ricotta tortellini, miso caramel gelato, and so much more.

A new genre of dining is emerging in Canberra’s culinary scene, we are seeing venues open well beyond their usual service times to offer locals a little something extra or out of the ordinary from their usual. The more we support these experiences the more of them we will see come to life.

4 courses $70, with paired wine $100
