‘O’ Week is a great time of year. New arrivals scout of locals to point them in the direction of the bus interchange, the supermarket and the pub. Meanwhile, old hands (read: second years) smile knowingly at the newbies, while barely acknowledging that they had a similar experience only 12 months ago.

It’s also a great time for music, as the parties kick in and bars bend over backwards to gain the early loyalty of a fresh load of potential clientele. Anyone is welcome at an ‘O’ Week gig (well, so long as you are over 18!), and at UC Live – part of the University of Canberra – there is something for everyone.

Kicking off festivities on Thursday night is Birds of Tokyo. Fresh from a massive year in 2013, the lads are bringing all their songs from album March Fires to UC Live! on Thursday 13 February. With Lanterns coming in at No. 22 on the latest Hottest 100, you can expect a big sing-a-long somewhere towards the later half of the show as ecstatic punters wave their phones in union.

A great chance to get out and meet fellow students is at the UC Life! V-Day Partay at the UC Refectory. Featuring DJs and a room filled with potential ‘new friends’ this is a fantastic ‘loosener’ for the year ahead.

Slightly more confrontational, (but still plenty of fun!) vintage rockers, Frenzal Rhomb will be hitting the UC@Zierholz stage on Saturday 15 February. It’s the perfect follow-up to a romantic Valentine’s, as Australia’s favourite punk rock band lets rip with classics including You are Not My Friend, Russell Crowe’s Band and Forever Malcolm Young.

As usual, it looks like a week filled with great music and activities to ring in the New Year at University of Canberra. We’ll have more events, reviews and photos over the coming week.
