Fires tore through Parlour, Flint and Bicicletta in 2011. Since then, Canberrans have mourned the loss of the heart of NewActon. However, after a couple of years of careful reconstruction the final pieces of the precinct are falling in to place. The recent opening of A. Baker showed the process was almost complete and, now with Parlour re-opening its doors with a fresh (though familiar) look, the historic building is filled with edgy new places to meet and dine.

This Sunday, NewActon’s Heritage Building officially opens anew with A. Baker at its centre. The new bakery, bar and restaurant is running regular Friday and Sunday sessions. But this Sunday is the launch, with unique music, contemporary dance, circus, poetry, food & beverage presentations and the launch of NewActon’s new band: POP!.

Like the event, cafes, bars and building, POP! uses old traditions to do something new. They’ve remade Sugar Sugar and Stayin’ Alive with electronics and a violin. The National Gallery of Australia is recreating burlesque and life drawing with a modern twist. You can sit with a glass of wine, draw naked models (painted, of course) and be entertained by 14 performers in the Nishi Gallery. Or you can recline in the hotly anticipated Parlour Wine Room with sexy jazz outfit Dollface. Over 25 performances across nine new spaces will be on this Sunday, 10 November from 12.00pm – 6.00pm in the centre of NewActon.

Old and New is about celebrating the shoulders on which we stand, in terms of architecture, cultural destinations and artforms.
