Dios mio! One of Melbourne’s best Mexican eateries is getting ready to take on Canberra’s dining scene, one corn chip at a time.

Opening later this year in the Canberra Centre, Fonda Mexican will bring its famous Mexican-inspired menu (yes, there will be margs) to our city. Serving delicious and simple share-style food, there will be all your favs including tacos, chargrilled quesadillas, burritos rolled with their signature tortillas, and nachos with house-made guacamole and pico de gallo.

Drinks-wise, because we all know that’s what you’re really interested in, will feature a killer beverage and cocktail list with a selection of cerveza (beer), cider, wines and of course an extensive list of margaritas ranging from house, traditional and frozen. And, for the famous Mexican cocktail, it doesn’t stop there, with Fonda’s beloved margarita paddle also featuring on the menu, giving you the option to taste four different flavours.

“We’re a fresh, fast, fun and casual experience. From our fit-outs to our staff (or Fondarians as we like to call them) to our food, we bring a fresh perspective on Mexican,” says Co-founder, Tim Macdonald.

“We are also willing to take risks with our menu. Brussel sprout taco, anyone? We are not traditional Mexican and this is what really sets us apart,” he adds.

Founded in Richmond, Victoria in 2011 by two mates, Fonda Canberra will mark their tenth location in Australia.

“The incredible hospitality scene is what initially drew us to Canberra. The atmosphere and the people,” says Macdonald.

“The people are very receptive to the food scene, and we saw that as a great opportunity to introduce Fonda. When we looked into it, it was really a no-brainer. Canberra is often overlooked because of its size compared to other cities across our states but it really is a hidden gem.”

While the official open date is still under wraps, it’s not too early to study the menu and pick what you’ll be ordering, right?
