A thirst for Riesling exceeded hospitality guru Andy Day (formerly of AKIBA, Kokomo’s, Sage, Pialligo Estate, Lilotang, 86 & Ellacure) which led him to break out on his own and open a Riesling-dedicated bar and restaurant.

The cosy space which once lodged Toasted on the corner of Eloura Lonsdale Street will be the new home of Rizla – a slang word for Riesling to really hit home that he’ll be having a bit of fun with this casual eatery/bar.

You can rely on half the menu supporting Canberra district Riesling, some notable Aussie brands, and some international curiosities including some iconic German names as well. While Riesling will be the most celebrated offering, you’ll still be able to get your lips on a crisp rosé, or a fine drop pf Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier by the glass!

Aside from the wine list, a bang on menu to support the spirituous venue will excite palates.

“Creating a menu designed wholly to pair with Riesling was the easy part,” Andy Day says. “Riesling is the most versatile wine I know, it can go with virtually any cuisine and almost any protein. The menu is seasonal, and every dish will work with the wine list; imagine fresh seafood, vegetables and white meats, light tropical desserts and of course a banging cheese plate.”

A unique ‘pop up’ cellar door experience is planned for every Sunday lunch in what’s called ‘Cellar to City’, bringing local wineries to the middle of town to show off their wares.

“It’s an easy way to promote the local wineries and make them super accessible. Who doesn’t like free wine with lunch?” – say what free?

Rizla is opening on Friday 13 September. Drinks & lunch all day Thursday to Sunday and dinner Wednesday to Sunday. And, we will keep you in the loop re, ‘free local wine on Sundays!’
