This year from 13-21 August, National Science Week will be bringing a whole lot of science fun to Canberra’s biggest shopping centres, as well as a variety of locations around the city.

On the weekends, visit Westfield Belconnen and Woden, South Point Tuggeranong, Cooleman Court or the Canberra Centre to discover the exciting science behind growing mushrooms, engineering with LEGO, parasites, geology, space, robotics and so much more through hands-on activities.

Then, across Canberra celebrate science with over 30 incredible events. The week kicks off with a seniors workshop in creative computing and walks through the Australian Botanic Gardens, as well as an Adults-only Sex on the Beach science show and Dark Energy in the Pub at Smith’s Alternative. Later in the week take part in a book reading with balloon twisting and DNA, a science film with Mars Attacks! at the National Film and Sound Archive and an electric night out exploring electricity in its many forms. The week then concludes with an interactive brain experience and a Fungi film screening and Q&A.

“The week focuses on the exciting world of science and how it relates to your everyday life. It is a wonderful opportunity to discover the scientists in Canberra and the fascinating work they do,” says Co-chair of National Science Week, Michelle Kothe.

For all the footy fans, head to the Raiders game on Sunday 14 August and watch as ANU’s Research School of Earth Sciences measure a ‘Footy Quake’ where they will use a seismometer to record the level of activity caused by the Viking clap and Raiders crowd celebrations.

If you’re interested in the world of science and want to learn more, National Science Week is Australia’s annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss hot topics, participate in experiments and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society.
