When the wind starts whipping off the lake this winter, you need fire, you need red meat, and you need a solid glass of red to wash it down.

The Wollongong and Newcastle favourite, 7 Cutz Steakhouse, has just fired up its grills at the southern end of Bunda Street, bringing a new steakhouse to the city.

Luxury Made for All

Let’s talk money first, because we’re all feeling the pinch. Usually, the words “luxury steakhouse” mean you’re looking at triple digits before you’ve even ordered a side of chips. Not here. Co-owners Sneha Dev and Savi Dutta are keeping things down-to-earth, with entry-level steaks starting at $36.

That is on par with your local pub, except you’re getting meat cooked by a chef who has grilled over 10,000 steaks in his career. Every cut comes with chips or salad, but we recommend doing yourself a favour and upgrade to the garlic herb butter potatoes. You won’t regret it.

Flame, Smoke, and a 1.3kg Tomahawk

Savi’s method is all about the open flame and rich, South African-inspired seasoning. He’s got a strict seven-step process, from the initial cut selection right down to the resting and finishing.

If you’ve gathered a crew to escape the frost, go straight for the 1.3kg tomahawk. It’s a beast of a dish meant for the middle of the table, loaded with chimichurri, mushroom sauce, and plenty of sides.

If you aren’t in the mood to share, there are plenty of Tajima wagyu, prime rib, and slow-cooked beef cheeks that practically melt if you look at them too hard. Not a massive steak fan? They’ve also got Portuguese marinated chicken, chilli prawn linguine, and a roasted eggplant dish with miso butter and lentils.

Date Night Done Right

The space itself has been completely rebuilt, trading bright shopping centre lights for a dark, dramatic interior and low, moody lighting. It’s the kind of place where you lose track of time.

The bar isn’t an afterthought, either. They’ve lined up a hefty cocktail list to help take the edge off a long week in the public service. If you’ve got a birthday coming up or just want to hide away with some mates, head up to the mezzanine level. They’ve built some seriously sleek private dining rooms up there that can host up to 16 people. It’s cozy, tucked away, and the perfect spot to settle in for the winter.
