The winner of the 2011 Museum of Australian Democracy Political Cartoonist Award was announced late last year. First Dog on the Moon AKA Andrew Marlton proudly accepted the prize.

Now, Behind the Lines: The Year’s Best Political Cartoons 2011 is on display at the Museum of Australian Democracy until 1st April 2012.

This exhibition is a Museum of Australian Democracy travelling exhibition and will travel throughout Australia in 2012.

“The cartoons in this year’s exhibition capture what has been an amazing year in Australian politics,” said Exhibition Curator Mr Guy Hansen.

“You get a chance to see what our cartoonists think of our politicians. You can laugh and cry as you reflect on what has happened this year.”

The exhibition highlights the major events of 2011 including the carbon tax debate, the Malaysian solution, suspension of live cattle trade in Indonesia, the increasing number of asylum seekers, and the debate on poker machines and plain packaging for cigarettes.

Director of the Museum of Australian Democracy, Ms Jenny Anderson said “as a place of dialogue, the museum presents the work of many artists as a reflection of and commentary on our democracy, including the works of cartoonists.”

“The often serious subject of politics is tempered by the wit and wisdom of our cartoonists. Their cartoons are a feature of everyday life that empowers people to be involved.”

The exhibition celebrates the artistic talents of Australia’s political cartoonists including First Dog on the Moon, David Pope, Jon Kudelka, Judy Horacek and Cathy Wilcox.

The Museum of Australian Democracy celebrates Australia’s greatest achievement—its democracy—in one of Australia’s most loved buildings.

The exhibition can also be viewed online and visitors can vote for their favourite cartoon.
