For those of us who have been desperately missing our much loved gigs and live music, the wait is over. This month, Canberra has some great upcoming acts from local and visiting artists to get you back in the swing of things. From live Aussie jazz to Dutch DJs, we’ve listed some fantastic live music for you to come along to this August.

Thando – Saturday 8th

Canberra raised, Melbourne based artist ‘thando’ is set to launch her new single ‘Naked’ at Smiths Alternative in Civic this Saturday. The Zimbabwean born singer, who has been described as ‘genre bending’, takes elements of hip hop, pop, electronic, and R&B and never fails to take her listeners on a journey of self-love and reflection. She has made appearances at various festivals including BIGSOUND and Strawberry Fields and has worked with the likes of REMI and Sampa the Great. Come along to see Thando show off her powerhouse vocals and commanding stage presence.

North Row – Saturday 9th

The two-piece band will be playing their first gig back since lockdown at Magoo’s Café & Bar on Kingston Foreshore. Come along for a relaxed afternoon of guitar and vocals as they make their Magoo debut at 1 – 4pm. Walk-ins are welcome.

Jazz on the Rocks – Tuesday 11th

Treat yourself to a rainy afternoon of smooth jazz and smooth drinks at Molly. Starting from 4pm, you’ll hear the likes of local jazz musicians including the Victor Rufus Trio, Leisa Keen & John Mackaey, and The Gypsyjazz Project – just to name a few.  Grab a drink and something to eat in the 1920s speakeasy style bar with old fashioned service and a warm, rainy afternoon atmosphere. Walk-ins are welcome, however, bookings are recommended for groups of more than 4 people.

FEEL ft. MaRLo – Friday 14th

Fiction Club is welcoming back one of Australia’s biggest DJs next Friday. MaRLo, a Dutch/Australian DJ has been on the music scene for more than a decade. If you love trance, techno, and house music, be sure not to miss MaRLo’s signature sound. Limited capacities apply so be sure to book now to secure a ticket to this intimate set.

Kirrah Amosa + MCKY at Exhibition Park – Friday 14th

Hosted by EPIC (Exibition Park) in Mitchell, Live in Ya Lounge presents Kirrah Amosa and MCKY next Friday from 6:30pm – 10:30pm. Kirrah Amosa is a Canberra native who’s indie-pop/ dance/electronic sound has been inspired by Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, and H.E.R. MCKY is a Canberra based R&B/soul singer-songwriter who tells soulful love stories with sultry vocals. Only 50 tickets are available for a socially distanced Live Studio audience, so be sure to book a table now. Hot food add-ons and bar service available.

Old Timey Wednesday at Smiths Alternative – Wednesday 26th

Come along to Smiths Alternative in Civic, where luminaries from the old-timey folk scene will gather to lead an open session featuring music from the 1800s and 1900s. Doors open at 3pm.

The Whitlams – Thursday 27th

Four-piece Sydney based band ‘The Whitlams’ present their ‘Gaffage and Clink 2020’ national tour this August at The Canberra Theatre Centre. Gracing Australian stages since their formation in Newtown in 1992, the indie-rock band have travelled the country each year playing at their favourite pubs and theatres, with Aussie favourites incuding ‘No Aphrodisiac’. The Whitlams will be playing a mix of new and classic songs with a fresh spring in their step. Tickets are available here.
