Since opening late last year, Fox and Bow in Farrer has become one of the Southside’s most popular cafes. With a great family feel and a sense of humour that runs through the venue’s fitout and menu, Fox and Bow has become something of a mecca for Canberra foodies thanks to owner and chef Alex Piris’ fresh and fun flavours.
The only thing you could ask for is, perhaps, another venue. The good news is that, from Monday, Ivy and The Fox will throw open its doors among the leafy surrounds of the ANU.
Regular visitors to the ANU would be familiar with Ivy Lakeview Café, which has operated out of Old Canberra House for the last five years. Well, the entire space has received a new look, and the feel is just right. A fireplace surrounded by comfy chairs harks back to the history of the building (which was the British High Commission and the original Commonwealth Club among other things!), and a street-art mural by Steve Caddick covers one of the walls close to the counter.
For Ivy Café and Fox and Bow to come together in one place represents part of a journey for the team. The Ivy’s owner, John Stokes was the first chef Alex worked under, so for them to unite their passions into one venue is a really exciting step. As Alex says, “John and I clicked straight away when I first started to cook. It’s so great to be able to put together something like this with someone I really admire.”
With a fully stocked bar, featuring Mountain Goat Steam Ale and Coopers Pale Ale on tap, Alex can envisage sunny afternoons with kids playing on the grass and plenty of live music. Open from Monday and then seven-days-a-week, this beautiful space looks set to follow the steps of Fox and Bow and become another Canberra favourite.
