Yesterday’s Melbourne Cup saw every track in Australia filled with thousands of people ready to try their luck at backing a winner in the big race. Each track was beautifully decorated, as always, with an array of blooms in bright colours and very stylish marquees.
The Melbourne Cup is also one of the biggest events of the year on the social calendar for fashionistas. It’s the day that designers and milliners dress and accessorise celebrities in their latest creations with the aim of setting a lasting trend.
Over the years these trends have been quite diverse, however this year it seems we were struck with nostalgia. The majority of women dressed in 60s-style shift dresses and 80s-style two pieces in bright, block colours.
The headwear was the statement piece for most looks this year – matching the bright colours of outfits and some new and innovative designs other than the classic Fascinator. To avoid looking ‘too busy’ the accessories were kept minimal using simple jewels and a pair of heels, while some added gloves for a finishing touch.
It seems the men even got the memo with many looking very smart dressed up in tailored suits accessorised with polished shoes, minimal accessories and top hats. Not everyone got it right, though – it seems Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin could have done with an honest friend.
