I think we can all agree, Berry is an absolute vibe. It’s the perfect country getaway, with its picturesque rolling hills, heritage buildings and delicious local food, while also being close enough to the white sandy beaches of Gerroa and Culburra. The perfect trip from Canberra when you need an extra-long weekend, or a day trip if you’re already heading to the coast, if you find yourself in the area, use our guide to the best spots to eat, play and stay in the area.
EAT
There is no doubt that Berry does food very well and we just may have spent a good portion of our recent visit planning out where our next location to eat would be.
Berry Donut Van – If you know, you know! The van is an absolute icon of Berry and their cinnamon donuts are a hit any time of day. On holidays it’s totally okay to start the day with coffee and donuts right?
The Garden Berry – Exactly as the same suggests, it boasts a pretty little outdoor garden to dine in the middle of town, even better it is pet-friendly. Serving up classics like smashed avo and brioche French toast, our favourite part was their pairing suggestions with lunch (and brunch), with hot tips on local breweries.
The Hungry Monkey – If you have been anywhere along this part of the coast you may be aware of this restaurant, with locations in Thirroul and Kiama. They have a quenching array of juices and killer burgers with their Southern Fry Chicken Burger almost in the running against our very own Grease Monkey.
The Berry Hotel – There is something about a good pub dinner that you can’t pass up and the Berry Hotel absolutely nails this brief. Boasting crowd faves like a steak or schnitzel, they also offer delicious poke bowls and their twist on a chicken salad with their Bang Bang salad. We enjoyed a local drink in their beer garden, but if you’re there in winter they also have all the old fireplaces which is the perfect spot for a wine.
PLAY
Drawing Room Rocks – This hike is located only 10 minutes out of Berry and takes you on a scenic 3km climb through the bush. There are a few steep areas but the views over the countryside to the sea are well worth it.
The Berry Tea Shop – This quiet afternoon tea spot is every bit as quaint as you could imagine – cute teacups, scones, cakes and an array of teas for everything you weren’t aware you needed – sleep, energy boost or even to create the perfect iced tea over summer. Spots for their tea tastings are limited, so we recommend booking.
Exploring Queen Street – The main street is full of gorgeous old buildings from the 1800s which have turned into an array of homewares, fashion and lifestyle stores. If you’re styling a home and need inspiration – trust us, this is the place. Our top pics are Few and Far Home, Amara, Haven and Milkwood Home – hello luxury must-haves, coffee table books (that aren’t your norm), entertaining and pampering delights, and all the natural, coastal décor vibes we’re crushing over.
The Treat Factory – Having visited Berry a few times, we’re not sure how we missed this gem but can confirm it will not be overlooked again. Located at the back of town, The Treat Factory is a family-run business producing an array of jams, sauces, condiments, and confectionery. You can also enjoy watching them make their delicious fudge and chocolates with milk from the local dairy. And if you arrive before Christmas, they also have the perfect selection of gingerbread men and festive-themed treats.
STAY
The Nest – This cute studio Airbnb is located within walking distance of the main street. Perfect for a couple, the space is dreamy and cosy, with board games, Netflix and the property’s dog Ginger who is on hand to meet all the guests and make them feel welcome. They also cater for your own four-legged pet if you feel guilty leaving them at home.
454 @ Jaspers – The perfect stay to really embrace the country life. Part of the Supercalla Private Properties, this gorgeous bush retreat is 10 mins out of town and can sleep eight. Perfect to grab the gang for a trip away or a family holiday, the property boasts a swimming pool, fire pit and alfresco dining area so you can stay in and relax.
