Across Canberra, many women navigate pregnancy and early parenting while carrying the weight of housing instability, family violence, financial stress, and social isolation. In fact, more than 33% of single parent families in Australia live below the poverty line, and 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence.
The sad truth is these struggles are often invisible, unfolding behind closed doors. Because behind the statistics are real women – living in our neighbourhoods, walking beside us, often without us even knowing.
Karinya House is a Canberra-based charity that has supported women across Canberra and the surrounding region for over 28 years, providing 24/7 care, safe accommodation, parenting support, baby goods, access to essential healthcare and more. For many women, this support comes at a critical turning point in their lives.
Now, they’re inviting you to be part of that support through Bud of Hope, a new initiative that turns collective Canberran generosity into ongoing care.
Why your support matters
While you might think that large, one-off donations are what turn the dial, it’s consistent giving that creates real, lasting impact. When combined, small monthly contributions build a powerful, reliable stream of support that allows initiatives like Bud of Hope to budget, plan, and deliver long-term care rather than short-term fixes. When many give a small amount regularly, it creates a reliable foundation that supports long-term change.
Inspired by the strength and renewal of Australian native flowers, Bud of Hope features a series of sponsorship tiers that allow individuals, businesses and community groups to contribute in a way that feels sustainable, helping provide safe accommodation and care for women facing significant vulnerability.
But like any garden, Karinya House’s ability to nurture stability and connection relies on ongoing care.
That’s where your recurring support can make a real difference. Donations start from as little as $2 a month, and they quickly add up. Just $50 can help a woman purchase essential pharmacy supplies for her newborn, and $896 can fund driving lessons that support her path to independence.
As Karinya House CEO Lavinia Tyrrel explains “the women we walk alongside are resilient beyond measure, but resilience shouldn’t mean doing it alone… when women feel backed by their community, their sense of possibility grows.”
Canberra is known for its strong community spirit, and this initiative invites locals to be part of steady, preventative support that helps women before situations have the chance to escalate. Anyone can become a Buddy by choosing a tier that reflects their shared commitment to supporting vulnerable women.
“It is a real privilege to support such a selfless and compassionate service supporting women to grow and build a better future” Lucia and Adolofo, Buddies since 2000.
