The National Arboretum Canberra has launched a brand-new program for it Nature Playgroup. The weekly program is designed to help young children build confidence, curiosity and a connection with the natural world.
Led by the Arboretum’s experienced educators, Nature Playgroup offers a nature-based approach to traditional indoor playgroups. All children aged 18 months to 5 years (and their parents/carers) are invited to learn and explore among the Arboretum’s iconic forests.
This is for many a rare chance to experience Parliament House under twilight with panoramic views only enjoyable from the terrace.
What Is Nature Playgroup?
For families new to the concept, Nature Playgroup blends gentle outdoor education with imaginative exploration, giving little ones the space to build physical skills, sensory awareness and emotional confidence in a calm, natural setting.
Instead of toys or plastic play equipment, children explore:
- sticks, stones, leaves and natural materials
- earth and water play
- simple climbing and balancing
- imaginative and role-play games
- sensory engagement with the environment
Each session is held in the peaceful shade of a forest within the Arboretum, often in the Cork Oak Forest or Himalayan Cedar Forest.
“Our aim is to nurture a sense of wonder, guide without imposing, create space for possibilities, and facilitate safe exploration and learning in the natural world,” says Bianca, Outdoor Educator at the National Arboretum.
“We believe in sowing the seeds of a deep and lasting connection with the natural environment. Our playgroup is an explorative journey. A foundation for children to become confident, caring, and environmentally conscious individuals.”
Research consistently shows that children who engage in nature‑rich environments become calmer, more focused, and develop stronger motor, social and sensory skills. Nature Playgroup brings that research to life in a fun, child‑led way.

Nature Play Sessions move between the Arboretum’s forests.

Main child ticket 18 mts to 5 yrs old – $15. Adults free. Under 18 months free with a main ticket. Up to 2 additional child tickets 18 mts to 5 yrs, can be booked for $5 each with a main ticket. Carers with children under 18 months can still book and attend but must have a ticket.
