Run, don’t walk – Bar Lola is bringing La Dolce Vita to Canberra.
Canberra’s beloved Verity Lane Market is expanding once again, with the launch of a new Italian inspired bar that transports you straight to the golden age of Italy. Nestled within the iconic Sydney Building, Bar Lola officially opens its doors today, Wednesday 21 May, offering a warm and stylish escape into classic Italian culture.
A nostalgic homage to 1950s and ’60s Italy, you can expect a celebration of timeless elegance, romance, and spirited charm, inspired by the legendary screen icon Gina Lollobrigida. The venue’s interiors reflect this, with a feminine, airy design that balances the building’s historic character with soft, chic sophistication.
“Bar Lola is our love letter to old-world Italy,” says Kathryn Oplantzakis, Head of Precinct at Verity Lane Market. “From the architecture to the wine list, we’ve been intentional about creating something beautiful, inviting and a little bit transportive.”
Bar Lola’s menu focuses on simple, quality Italian done well. All pastas are made fresh daily, and the seasonal sauces are designed to pair effortlessly with the all-Italian wine list. Wines are unapologetically Italian with hard-to-find varieties offered by the glass or carafe. Cocktails lean into Italian tradition, with classics and clever twists built to line the stomach hearty, satisfying Italian food.
The venue’s aesthetic was inspired by dreamy Italian travel experiences along with a desire to do justice to the Sydney Building’s unique character.
“We wanted it to feel like a place for everyone,” says Oplantzakis. “Whether you’re stopping in for an after-work drink, catching up with friends, or lingering over a bottle of Barolo and a plate of vodka pasta, Bar Lola welcomes all.”
Bar Lola adds an elevated, yet approachable, option to the laneway’s already vibrant mix of eateries and bars. Start your night with a casual laneway drink, then a Italian dinner at Bar Lola, with a nightcap at sister venue Dear Prudence.
Located at 98 Alinga Street, corner of Alinga Street and Northbourne Avenue Bar Lola will initially open Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm till late. Stay tuned, extended hours are in the talks for Spring/Summer.
