Bringing Oscar Qualifying short films to dazzle our screens, Flickerfest is back on its national tour, heading to Palace Electric Cinema Canberra on Thursday 15 May.
Australia’s leading Academy Qualifying and BAFTA-recognised short film festival is celebrating its 34th year, and it’s returning to Canberra with a new line-up in tow. After drawing a record-breaking 3,500 entries for the 2025 season, the festival has handpicked a selection of standout short films from across the globe, offering a unique taste of the world’s best cinema in bite-sized form.
Canberra audiences can experience the magic of Bondi’s iconic beachside screenings when Flickerfest rolls into town for one night only on Thursday 15 May at 7pm, transforming Palace Electric Cinema into a vibrant celebration of European storytelling.
This year’s Best of EU Shorts programme, presented in partnership with the European Union Delegation to Australia, is a cinematic journey across the continent. Showcasing the most acclaimed films from Flickerfest’s Oscar-qualifying International Competition, the lineup brings a mix of powerful narratives, striking visuals, and boundary-pushing creativity.
Among the standout selections is The Boy With White Skin, a hauntingly beautiful co-production from France and Senegal that was awarded Best EU Short Film. Also featured is Chico from France, which took out Best EU Rainbow Short Film for its deeply personal take on identity and belonging. From Germany comes the gripping drama This Is Not A Character This Is Betrayal, a performance-driven piece that left Bondi audiences stunned. And Belgium’s Oscar-nominated animation Beautiful Men brings wit, charm, and a touch of surrealism to the screen.
Giving a diverse taste of all Flickerfest has to offer right here in the capital, tickets include the chance to hear from the filmmakers before the screening and a complimentary Gage Roads craft beer or a glass of Rosnay Organic wine while you watch.
