Are you feeling a little flat after the first week back at work? Perhaps you’re looking to enjoy one last day of freedom before strapping on the chains of industry and heading back for another twelve months at the wheel.

This Sunday there are a few options to blow out the cobwebs and enjoy the summer weather.

Museum of Australian Democracy

When was the last time you visited? Probably last time friends were in town. If you haven’t been for a while, it’s certainly worth making a trip back and reconnecting with this beautiful building filled with history. Mind you, there’s plenty going on at the moment, with the Behind The Lines exhibition of political cartoons. Every Sunday in January, you can enjoy live music at The Terrace Café from 12.30pm – 3.30pm. Local acts include:

The Night Café (12 Jan)
The Light Workers (19 Jan)
The Cashews (26 Jan)

This week’s selection – The Night Café – came together as the night café to play music of beauty and passion. The band draws inspiration from across the world with a repertoire that is a heady elixir of Cuban salsa, Brazilian bossas, Argentinean tango, songs from the Romany and Gypsy Swing traditions, jazz standards and French café music.

The Terrace Café also has a special Sunday offer of a delicious antipasti platter and 2 glasses of sangria for just $20! (Offer valid 10am – 4pm on 12, 19 and 26 January only) Plus, downstairs in the Gallery, caricaturist Chris Wilson (Cartoons by Chris) will be available to sketch your portrait (for a small fee). It makes for a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon in one of our national treasures.

Getting’ Lazy

For those whom an early night isn’t so essential, there’s nothing more naughty than making your way upstairs to The Loft at Duxton in O’Connor to enjoy heady cocktails and dreamy snacks at their Lazy Sundays from 5.30pm. Walk in during the afternoon sun and retreat some unknown time later with with the firm idea that Monday is someone else’s problem

Beer gardens

Sub-Urban, The Kingo, Duxton and Lighthouse all have beer gardens where you can settle in for a few hours. Grab a beer or wine, (don’t forget to eat!) and settle in with friends for an afternoon where people come and go, and trips to the bar are endless. There are plenty of other options in the city and surrounding suburbs, so be sure to make the most of this social weather.

Australian Botanic Gardens

Voted as one of the 100 things people like about Canberra, the Summer Sounds concert series is on each Sunday evening through January. The concerts feature some of Canberra’s best live bands performing in an outdoor setting.

This weekend sees the Shirazz Jazz Band (classic hot jazz of the ’20s & ’30s) hit the stage from 5.30pm. Entry is via gold coin donation, and all the money goes to funding the ongoing maintenance of the gardens. Be sure to grab yourself a blanket, a picnic and a sneaky bottle of wine and watch the sun go down.

There you go! Happy Sunday!
