Monday mornings are horrible. Truly horrible. We all wish the weekend could extend for just one more day.

Well, come Monday 3 February, if your weekend consists largely of sitting around watching sport and enjoying too much food, Smoque in the city is turning it on for you. Write off almost an entire day for Superbowl XLVIII – the game that for many is long and confusing, but is still a better option than being at work.

This year the might of the Seattle Seahawks, the number one defensive team in the NFL, is taking on the number one offense in the Denver Broncos. Both teams were the best in their respective Divisions, which makes for a contest as mouthwatering as the menu. The match takes part in New York City, and should be entertaining for no other reason than it will be around -5C when the fireworks stop and the game finally commences.

In Australia, that time should be around 10.30am. This gives you plenty of time to roll out of bed and enjoy a light snack prior to gorging yourself on Buffalo Wings and Budweiser over the five hours the game is expected to run.

While Australians have never really taken to America’s national sport (hey, the Americans are yet to embrace the AFL!) the numbers surrounding the game are extraordinary. As you might expect, most of these big numbers are a result of the games being on TV – and the value of viewers to advertisers.

Take, for example, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning has a contract worth an extraordinary $20 million dollars per year, but even this would only buy him about three minutes of advertising (or one entire typical commercial break) during the Superbowl. Why is the advertising so expensive? Largely, it’s because three out of four households in the USA will have the game on their television. Unfortunately, the Aussie Rules Grand Final could only dream of that sort of audience.

So, the Superbowl is not just a game of football, it’s a cultural phenomenon – and one that comes with it’s own cuisine. This cuisine is something that Smoque does particularly well, so be sure to join the team on Monday morning for finger lickin’ barbeque, beers and some Bruno Mars at half-time to boot.

Go Seahawks!
