We think dessert is one of the best inventions! It’s perfect for after dinner, a mid-morning snack, a mid-afternoon snack, it can be eaten on a first date or on an anniversary. Sweet treats are used to celebrate birthdays or weddings and given as a gift or just to make someone feel better.

Did you know that desserts spelled backwards is ‘STRESSED’? It’s as if the sugary sweetness and delectable tastes of these marvellous creations were made to make us happy again. Well, it works doesn’t it? They even look good – always filled with exciting colour and great finishing touches.

We wanted to find out the best places to go for DESSERT…so we asked you!

These were the top six suggestions:

1. Max Brenner – Eastlake Parade, Kingston Foreshore
Since Max Brenner moved to Canberra it has become one of the most popular places to go on a date. The Spectacular Choc-Fudge Brownie for $13.50 is true to its name and is a spectacular display of double chocolate ice-cream, fudge walnut brownie chunks and caramelised pecans. Served in a sundae glass with pure melted chocolate and crunchy dark waffle balls, it’s sure to tickle your taste buds – but you may need to share (it’s very rich!)

2. Dolce & Salato Pasticceria – Bunda Street, Canberra City
Dolce & Salato is an Italian Pasticceria cafe and sweets boutique located in the heart of the city. The sweet treats include creamy, delicious, ice cold gelato, freshly baked bread and pastries and yummy cakes, tarts and chocolates which all go brilliantly with a cup of coffee.

3. Stripey Sundae – O’Hanlon Street, Gold Creek
The Stripey Sundae is a little ice-creamery in Gold Creek which uses local produce to make their own ice-cream, sorbet and other sweet treats. The interior has a cute antique feel with colourful bunting, flower pots and a fireplace (which we hope will be used in Winter so we can still eat ice-cream!). Some of the innovative ice-cream and sorbet flavours featured at Stripey Sundae have been Blood Plum, Turkish Delight, Salted Butter Caramel, Pina Colada and Cardamon.

4. Koko Black – Bunda Street, Canberra City
Koko Black is a hand-made-chocolate bar situated on Bunda Street in the heart of the busy city. Inside the cafe is also a shop where you can buy everything featured on the menu, and with Easter coming it’s a great place to visit for amazing Easter Bunnies and eggs! Using high-quality chocolate, every piece has been meticulously crafted by their chocolatier – which sounds like a job we’d love! If you have a soft spot for chocolate, you will adore Koko Black!

5. Cold Rock – Belconnen, Erindale, Dickson and Gungahlin
Cold Rock is all about having a fun experience and lets you create your own ice-cream – right down to all the yummy extra bits you want ‘smashed’ and rolled into it. Choose your size, choose your flavour/s and then choose the extras. Some delicious mixtures are Cookies & Cream ice cream with smashed M&M’s and Oreo’s, chocolate ice-cream with smashed Snickers and Maltesers, Aussie vanilla ice-cream with smashed Strawberry & Chocolate Fudge, and Bubblegum ice-cream with smashed Flake and Gummy Bears. Yum!

6. Pancake Parlour – Alinga Street, Canberra City
The Pancake Parlour is a hidden but well-known gem! Try the world famous buttermilk or buckwheat pancake stacks with almost any flavour you can possibly imagine. The original version loved by many is the maple-flavoured syrup with your choice of whipped butter, cream, vanilla and/or chocolate ice-cream. Then there is the breakfast menu featuring well-known brekky-style dishes such as Eggs Florentine and Eggs Benedict – Hollandaise sauce and all – on pancakes. Main meal pancakes or crepes come with toppings such as Mexican Chicken and Barramundi Fish…..and last but not least of course there is the huge list of dessert pancakes featuring the works! Strawberries, banana, caramel, ice-cream, chocolate and more!!
