Bored with your current digs? Fear not – there are many ways to spruce-up your home’s tired features.

We took a tour of Canberra’s home of heavy machinery and hardware stores, Fyshwick, to discover the best of domestic outlets.

MMM Design 51-55
Kembla St Fyshwick

MMM Interiors was awarded with ‘Winner of Australian Bathroom Design 2013’ and you can certainly see why when you step into their showroom: they offer a unique and funky range of items from which to design your own dream bathroom and kitchen..
As well as the usual bathroom accessories they sell beautifully crafted mirrors and even freestanding statues. There’s also a big range of large, coloured tiles that will definitely get the creative juices flowing!

Design House

27-29 Collie St Fyshwick

Walking up to Design House and the first thing that grabs your attention is the large display of hanging wooden ball lamps in the window.

Inside, there is a bit of a vintage flavour to some pieces – a personal favourite being a green-chequered low-back chair with buttons on the seat cushion. Design House offers examples of the smaller intricacies for the home, including cute button earrings, mugs and kitchen tools.

They also sell a cool new concept: ‘sustainable stubbies’. They’re beer bottles turned into practical kitchen glasses. Walk upstairs and you will find a completely new scene, where – among countless fabric books for curtain and upholstery design – consultants can help to design exactly what you have always dreamt of.

Vast Interior
Shop 9 DFO
337 Canberra Avenue Fyshwick

Vast Interior boasts a massive showroom featuring beautiful, earthy, handcrafted timber furniture – with 90% of their product range made with sustainable, renewable and recycled materials. One major difference that put Vast Interior into my Top 5 was their integration of environmental factors with ‘the indoors’.

There is an abundance of decorative flowers that really liven up the whole showroom. In each living room setting the flowers are displayed in beautiful painted glass vases alongside stunning glass sculptures and art pieces.

Vast Interior offers a large decorative cushion range as well as rugs, shelving and candles – including a colourful-patchwork, high-backed sofa unlike anything I had ever seen.

Provincial Homemaker Hub
Canberra Outlet Centre 337 Canberra Ave

Stepping into Provincial (with the soft sounds of Stardust by Benny Goodman in the background) gives a feeling of warmth and comfort.

Provincial is definitely a shop for those who love classic and timeless home decor, stocking a large range of kitchen accessories, glass storage jars and matching pastel sets of biscuit containers, bowls, plates and colanders.

There is an old-fashioned feeling to the stylish decor presented here – including an antique hat and coat rack – and fun extra touches to add to your next dinner party (we loved the small bird sculptures placed in every individual dining bowl).

Jimmy Possum
Homemaker Hub Canberra Outlet Centre 337 Canberra Ave
Jimmy Possum’s large showroom is a delight to enter. You will be immediately immersed in a beautifully decorated and spacious living area with vibrant splashes of colour combined with their specialty timber furniture.

Jimmy Possum is an environmentally-conscious brand as they source recycled timber for their pieces. Stepping through an artistically decorated tribal-themed room into an earthy, red room is the perfect place for inspiration. They have an excellent range of accessories and the fun mixed-texture cushions (in both leather and fur) caught my eye.

Also, the original hand painted art brings this vibrant shop to life. Definitely worth a visit!
