Hold onto your petticoats because Frocktober is on its way! The month-long charity event that raises money and awareness for ovarian cancer is finally coming to Canberra, thanks to the commitment of a small group of local frockaholics.

Frocktober puts forward a challenge to girls, women and interested men far and wide, to don a frock for a day, week, fortnight or a full month during October, and get sponsored for it.

The first Frocktober event was held three years ago in Melbourne, when a group of young friends from Geelong with a passion for health promotion, community engagement and fashion decided to hold a fundraiser to raise money for women’s health. Inspired by the knowledge that ovarian cancer is an area of women’s health requiring increased research resources and community awareness, they chose the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation as their beneficiary.

Just six weeks ago a local Canberra girl heard about this great cause and saw an opportunity to bring the awareness-raising celebration to the nation’s capital. With a small committee of eight volunteers, the Frocktober Canberra team will be donning dresses and throwing spectacular Frocktober events for our community.

Frocktober Canberra aims to raise $10,000 for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation in 2010 and raise awareness of Ovarian Cancer and broader women’s health issues.
