Fred Williams: Infinite Horizons, an exhibition showcasing the work of one of Australia’s greatest painters, opens at the National Gallery of Australia from Friday 12th August.

The exhibition is the first major retrospective of Williams’ work in over 25 years. It highlights his strength as a painter and includes important large oil paintings and luminous gouaches that reveal his distinctive approach, often combining a feeling for place with a strong abstract emphasis.

Featuring 120 works of art, the exhibition provides an insight into Fred Williams’ unique take on the Australian landscape. It includes major international loans from the Tate in London, and numerous works from private collections, many of which have not been displayed publicly before.

Williams’ inspiration often emerged from the unique qualities of landscapes around Australia, from Upwey in Victoria to the Bass Strait in Tasmania and the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Visitors will see landscapes that they may know well, along with seascapes and portraiture.
