The latest ACT Budget has delivered some very good news for our social calendars.

Over the next four years, the ACT Government is investing in tourism, events and live entertainment, with the aim of growing the local visitor economy by up to $1 billion by 2030.

For Canberrans, that means more live music, upgraded venues, and a stronger year-round calendar of things to see and do.

Here’s what’s heading our way.

The Lyric Theatre is finally happening

We’ve been talking about it for years, but the dream of a proper, 2,000-seat Lyric Theatre is officially getting closer.

Scheduled to open in 2028, the new theatre is expected to give Canberra the kind of venue needed to attract larger theatre productions, concerts and touring shows that have traditionally skipped the capital.

It will also form part of a broader city-shaping events and entertainment precinct, with the ACT Government continuing work on the new National Convention and Entertainment Centre.

Face-lifts for GIO, EPIC, and the Theatre Centre

While we wait for the shiny new builds, some of Canberra’s existing venues are also getting attention.

The Budget includes funding for upgrades to key venues including GIO Stadium, EPIC and the Canberra Theatre Centre, helping them support better events, bigger crowds and improved production needs.

And yes, if that happens to include some extra comfort for freezing Friday night Raiders games, we certainly won’t complain.

Floriade’s big 40th birthday

Whether you love the tulips or just go for the food trucks, Floriade is a Canberra institution.

In 2027, the festival will celebrate its 40th anniversary, with funding set to help expand the event and extend opening hours. That means more time to explore the gardens after work without having to rush out before the gates shut.

Cricket at Manuka and a boosted events fund

If you prefer your entertainment on the pitch, the Budget also includes support to secure international cricket fixtures at Manuka Oval, covering both men’s and women’s competitions. And on top of that, the ACT’s Major Event Fund is getting a boost to help attract more festivals, exhibitions, sporting matches and large-scale events to town.
