Most shoes are made for a season. Sparrods & Co makes them to last decades.
Founded by Samuel Kwame Nyarko, Sparrods & Co is built around a simple but increasingly rare idea: a good pair of shoes should be made to last. While much of the fashion world encourages people to buy quickly and replace even faster, Sparrods & Co does things a little differently. Its shoes are designed with longevity in mind, and that philosophy feels well suited to Canberra, a city that appreciates practicality, quality and making things last.
From Portugal to Canberra
Before launching Sparrods & Co, Samuel worked in ICT, helping companies improve their business systems, processes and technology. That might seem a long way from leather and hand-finished soles, but Samuel was used to thinking carefully about how things are built, how they perform and what happens when small details are overlooked.
That same attention to detail would eventually lead him to shoes and his journey into footwear began out of frustration. After moving to Australia, he kept finding shoes that looked great but didn’t last, or pairs that were simply priced out of reach. So, he took it upon himself to fill the gap in the market.
In 2016, Samuel began learning about traditional shoemaking, materials and construction methods, and that search led him halfway across the globe to Porto, Portugal. There, he immersed himself in the craft, visiting workshops, speaking with makers and learning what separates a run of the mill pair of shoes from a pair you can truly rely on, year after year.
Today, Sparrods & Co shoes are crafted in Portugal by a small, family-run workshop that has been producing shoes for generations, while the brand’s leather belts are made in Spain. That European craftsmanship sits at the heart of the brand, bringing old-world shoemaking to modern Australian wardrobes.
Give Your Shoes a Second Life
A welt is the strip of leather that connects the upper part of the shoe to the sole. It might not be the first thing you notice, but it plays a big role in how a shoe wears, holds together and can eventually be repaired.
The issue with most mass-produced shoes is that they’re glued together. So once the sole is finished, the shoes usually are too.
And that’s exactly why Sparrods & Co uses Goodyear welt construction and Blake rapid stitching, two shoemaking methods that have been used for more than 150 years. The benefit is simple: when the sole eventually wears down, the shoe doesn’t have to be replaced. A skilled cobbler can resole it and keep the rest of the shoe going, giving each pair a life measured in decades rather than seasons. Over time, that makes the cost of owning them much more affordable, so you end up spending less by buying better once.
Instead of treating shoes as disposable, they’re encouraging customers to buy better, care for what they own and repair rather than replace.
Shoes that Get Better with Age
The brand isn’t interested in leather that only looks good on day one, they choose leather for the way it performs over time. Leather that softens, holds its shape and develops character with wear.
Sourced from European tanneries, Sparrods & Co uses box calf and full grain calfskin across most of its range. Full grain leather comes from the strongest part of the hide and retains its natural grain, giving it the structure, durability and depth needed to age well. Instead of looking tired after a few wears, the leather gradually settles in, developing a finish that becomes unique to the person wearing it.
The marks that appear over time are not treated as flaws, but as signs of a shoe doing what it was made to do. With the right care, the leather starts to soften, shape and show you it’s been worn properly. These are the small signs that a shoe is being lived in, not worn out, and for Sparrods & Co, that’s the appeal.
Across boots, dress shoes, loafers and sneakers, Sparrods & Co balances polish with everyday wearability. The shoes are refined enough for the office or a formal event, but practical enough to handle real life year after year.
The Difference is in the Details
Sparrods & Co works in small batches so the makers can focus on what matters most: the fit, the finish and the feel of each pair. Because when a brand cares that much about what it produces, it shows in the final product. In fact, every pair is individually inspected before it leaves Portugal.
And that same attention to detail carries through to the buying experience. Sparrods & Co offers detailed sizing guidance and the team pride themselves on providing personalised solutions rather than generic recommendations.
For anyone looking to invest in shoes that look good now and great for years to come, Sparrods & Co is the place to go.
