Canberra’s first purpose-built badminton centre has officially opened in Fyshwick, delivering what its founders believe is one of Australia’s most comprehensively equipped badminton facilities and setting a new benchmark for the sport in the nation’s capital.
Canberra Badminton Centre was created by local couple Cheng Li and William Cai, who spent years playing in shared halls, school gyms and multi-purpose sports centres before deciding Canberra deserved a venue designed exclusively for badminton.
Located at 27 Lithgow Street, Fyshwick, the centre features 12 dedicated courts, engineered flooring, A-grade badminton mats and specialised anti-glare lighting, with every element designed to improve player performance and the overall playing experience.
For William, who has played badminton since childhood and has been involved in Canberra’s badminton scene for more than a decade, the project was about creating the kind of facility the sport has never had in the ACT.
“We knew this was an opportunity to build something that simply didn’t exist here,” said Cai.
“Rather than asking how little we could spend, we asked what kind of facility the sport deserved. Every decision came back to creating the best possible experience for players.”
Cai said the centre had been designed with the long-term growth of badminton in mind.
“As the sport continues to grow, players will expect facilities that are designed specifically for badminton, not adapted from other sports,” he said.
“We wanted Canberra to already have that venue and to create something that would still be setting the standard in ten years’ time.”
The centre is also expected to strengthen Canberra’s ability to attract interstate and international players, coaching programs, tournaments and training camps, opening new opportunities for the city to participate in the broader growth of badminton in Australia.
While the facility has been built to support high-performance training and competition, Cheng Li said it was equally important that it remained accessible and enjoyable for everyday players.
“This isn’t just a space for competitive players,” she said.
“Whether you want to play socially with friends, join a coaching program, book a casual court or train seriously, the centre has been built for all levels.”
Operating daily from 10am until midnight, Canberra Badminton Centre will offer social court hire, coaching programs, competitions, school sessions and community events, positioning badminton as both a competitive sport and an easy, social way for Canberrans to stay active.
“Badminton is one of the most social and accessible sports you can play, and we wanted the centre to reflect that,” said Li.
“We’ve created a place where people can come together, whether they have played for years or are picking up a racquet for the first time.”
An on-site pro shop is also set to open in the coming weeks, offering racquets, apparel, accessories and professional badminton equipment.
