Magda Szubanski, actor, comedian and writer, will be speaking at The National Press Club on Wednesday 29th November! Arrivals are from 11.30am and speaking will conclude at 1.30pm.
Magda Szubanski is one of Australia’s most loved and respected actors. She is best known for her roles’ as Mrs Hoggett in the Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning film Babe and its sequel Babe: Pig In The City, and also her performance as Sharon Strzelecki in the hit television series and now feature film Kath and Kimderella. Magda teamed up with the Babe creators again to voice the box office hit Happy Feet and its’ sequel Happy Feet 2. Her other film credits include Santa’s Apprentice, The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, alongside the late Steve Irwin, Son Of The Mask, with Jamie Kennedy and Alan Cumming, The Golden Compass, with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, and the Australian films Dr Plonk directed by Rolf de Heer and Bran Nu Dae by Rachel Perkins.
Magda’s stage appearances have been larger than life performances including recent productions of Guys and Dolls and the late Nora Ephron’s Love, Loss and What I Wore. Other credits include The Melbourne Theatre Company production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the national tour of Grease: The Arena Spectacular alongside John Farnham and The Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of The Mad Woman Of Chaillot. Most recently she performed alongside Geoffrey Rush and Hugh Sheridan in Simon Phillip’s A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum in 2012, and alongside Ronan Keating in the musical comedy, Goddess in 2013.
After early training with the ABC-TV cult show D-Generation, Magda shot to fame in 1989 in response to the huge variety of comic characters she created for the sketch comedy Fast Forward, which played for several seasons and became one of Australia’s highest-rating comedies. Magda’s other television credits include the Dogwoman tele-features, Big Girl’s Blouse and Something Stupid, all of which she co-wrote, co-produced and starred in. She had an emotional journey when the SBS television show Who Do you think You Are? did a story on her family’s heritage.
Magda’s most iconic character is Sharon Strzelecki from the blockbuster sitcom Kath & Kim, which is widely acknowledged as the most successful comedy in Australian television history. The show made the cultural leap to US and UK television and was re-made for US Audiences. A feature-length film brought Kath and Kim to the big screen with The Kath & Kimderella released in 2012. In 2015 Magda headed up the hugely successful sketch series Open Slather. She has recently wrapped on Ben Elton’s Three Summers; Stephen Amis’ The BBQ and is currently shooting the new series Sisters.
Magda has received many accolades in the course of her career, including a Mo Award, seven Logie Awards, three Awgie Awards, two People’s Choice Awards and an AFI for Best Actress. She remains one of Australia’s greatest and most loved acting talents.
In addition to her acting work, in October 2015 Magda release her hugely successful first book, Reckoning. Heartbreaking, joyous, traumatic, intimate and revelatory, Reckoning is the book where Magda Szubanski tells her story.
Reckoning is the winner of the 2016 ABIA Book of the Year, 2016 ABIA Biography of the Year, 2016 Nielsen BookData Booksellers Choice Award, 2016 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-Fiction, 2016 Indie Award for Non-Fiction; and has been shortlisted for the 2016 ABIA Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year and 2016 Dobbie Literary Award.
