Let’s be honest, when winter hits Canberra, the temptation to lock yourself indoors with a heated throw and pretend the outside world doesn’t exist is incredibly strong. But there is one annual tradition that gets us out of the house and over the bridge (for those up north) on a freezing winter night. The Christmas in July Festival is returning for its fifth anniversary, and it’s going back to exactly where the magic first started.
Going Back to the Parliamentary Triangle
If you missed the sprawling lawns and grand views of the festival’s early days, you’re in luck. For this milestone fifth year, the event is heading straight back to Parkes Place Lawns West, right next to Old Parliament House. Having those historic white pillars as a backdrop while you’re clutching a warm drink makes the whole European winter village vibe feel incredibly real.
Even better? They’ve stretched the party out to five full days, running from Wednesday 1 July to Sunday 5 July 2026. It lines up perfectly with the start of the winter school holidays, so expect the lawns to be absolutely buzzing.
Snow, Hot Cheese, and Warm Hands
This is all about the simple, messy joy of street food in the freezing cold. We’re talking about the return of the melted raclette stations, where bubbling cheese is scraped directly onto hot potatoes and garlic sausage right in front of you.
You can grab a spot by the open fire pit gardens to thaw out your fingers, sip on spiced mulled wine from the wooden chalets, and wander down the designated ‘Snow Lane’ where artificial snow drifts through the crisp night air. It’s the kind of sensory overload that makes you forget your nose has gone red.
A Five-Day Winter Escape
The team behind the festival is leaning hard into the cozy village atmosphere this year. Along with the heavy hitters like the fondue and wine bars, there will be live local music, roaming performers, and plenty of artisan stalls to browse. Gather your mates and your puffer jacket to enjoy the Canberra chill for once.
