ACT Hospitality Industry Shines at AHA Awards

Canberra’s leading restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs and hotels were recognised at the Australian Hotels
Association’s Hospitality Awards gala dinner on Monday night.

450 people attended the event at Rydges Lakeside which saw 32 awards handed out to Canberra’s outstanding performers
in the hospitality industry.

Big winners on the night included George Harcourt Inn, Hotel Realm, The Hyatt, and the Diamant Hotel, all taking out multiple awards.

The Making of a Milliner

Outside of racing season, the art of millinery doesn’t get that much attention. It was given centre stage last week at the Hyatt hotel, where tomorrow’s millinery masters showed off their range of handmade wares to celebrate the completion of their CIT Certificate III in Millinery.

One of the graduates, Linda Walsh, said it was a relative who inspired her to enroll in the 18 month course.

“A seed was planted some years back when I discovered that my dearly departed Nana had an interest in Millinery,” she says.

Cilla Jane

Since winning the John Butler Seed Fund grant in 2006, Melbourne singer/songwriter Cilla Jane has gone on to build her profile around the country, having shared the stage with The Audreys, Kate Miller-Heidke, Tim Freedman, Brian Kennedy and Luka Bloom.

In May, Jane released her second album, ‘Until Morning Comes’, an offering she describes as “eclectic pop.”

For first single, ‘Into The Woods’, a haunting combination of strings, piano and vocals, Jane has been working with animator Adam Phillips to create an animated flim clip.

Recap: Wagons @ Transit Bar

Melbourne band, Wagons brought their unique take on country music to Transit Bar last Friday as part of their ‘Rumble, Shake & Tumble tour’.

Matt Banham, a solo artist from Adelaide warmed up the crowd with a little folk, a little synth-pop and a lot of dancing. He began with his back to the audience, repeatedly singing his name before launching into a cover of the Icehouse classic, ‘Electric Blue’. Though he was different in style to the headline act, his fun, lively performance set the mood for the rest of the evening.
