Trivia nights are a classic Canberra winter survival strategy. They’re warm, the pub grub is comforting, and they offer the perfect outlet for competitive public servants to prove they’re the smartest in the room.
Here’s where to test your brainpower this winter.
Pop Culture and Nostalgia Trips
If your brain is filled with useless pop culture quotes from thirty years ago, you’re in luck. The Durham in Kingston is hosting a dedicated Seinfeld trivia night on Thursday 23 July. Expect plenty of “no soup for you” references and maybe a heated debate about shrinkage.
If magic is more your vibe, The Durham is also running a Wizards and Witches trivia night on Thursday 11 June. Bring your team, brush up on your spellwork and leave any muggle logic at the door.
Down south in Tuggeranong, there’s a free Marvel Superheroes Family Trivia afternoon on Saturday 11 July, giving families a school holiday option that doesn’t involve another freezing walk around the lake.
Midweek Brain Drains
Need to break up the Monday-to-Friday grind? Head underground on Wednesdays to 88mph on Hobart Place. Their weekly trivia is loud, fast, and fuelled by retro pizza slabs and blue VKs. It’s the perfect antidote to a dry day of sitting behind a screen.
Over on the south side, Woden Southern Cross Club runs Thursday night trivia that’s perfect for a casual feed and some low-stakes competitive puzzling.
For a Good Cause
Canberrans love a fundraiser, especially when there’s a raffle involved. On Thursday 18 June, The Durham is hosting a Braveheart’s trivia night in support of John Wilson’s seven-marathons-in-seven-days run.
If you prefer four-legged friends, the ACT Pet Crisis Support Trivia Night is taking over Canberra Southern Cross Club on Friday 31 July. You can show off your big brain while helping support pets and people in crisis across the ACT.
The Suburb Classics
You don’t have to brave Civic parking to get your trivia fix. The outer suburbs are bringing the goods too.
Lanyon Vikings is hosting LUFC Trivia for the soccer crowd, while Gungahlin Lakes Golf & Community Club has a fundraising trivia night on Saturday 20 June.
If you’re in the inner north, Ainslie Football Club on Wakefield Avenue is keeping it family-friendly with a Junior Trivia Night on Sunday 26 June, giving locals another reason to rug up and head out.
