Spring might still feel a long way off, but Australia’s biggest celebration of the season is already taking shape.
We had the opportunity to ask Ross Triffitt, Executive Branch Manager at Events ACT, a few questions about to expect from Floriade 2026, and this year, they are ditching the usual formula for something far more delicious.
A Feast For All Senses
The theme for 2026 is officially “Feast of Flowers,” celebrating the intersection of nature, community, and local food, which means that Commonwealth Park is going to look, smell, and feel a little different this spring.
“In 2026, Floriade will bloom under the theme ‘Feast of Flowers’, a celebration of the joyful intersection between nature, food, and community,” Ross tells us. “Inspired by the rhythms of the seasons and the traditions of gathering, cooking, and sharing, the theme invites visitors to experience spring with all their senses.”
Instead of simply admiring the flowers, the garden beds themselves will tell a culinary story. Ross says the displays will “mirror the colours, textures, and abundance of fresh, seasonal produce,” with immersive garden experiences where the scent of the blooms mingles with the aromas of hot food.
The Hot New Hangout: The Floriade Pavilion
If your usual Floriade routine involves a lap of the lake, a quick bucket of hot chips, and a wander through the tulips, the 2026 setup is designed to make you linger.
The biggest new addition this year is the Floriade Pavilion, located at Ferry Gate. The Pavilion will act as a dedicated hub for workshops, masterclasses, and interactive demonstrations.
“The Floriade Pavilion will bring chefs, creators and garden experts to the stage to share their knowledge and tastings of their creations with Floriade visitors,” Ross explains. “The Pavilion will become a destination at Floriade for exclusive experiences, community-based workshops and a beautiful space to enjoy throughout the event.”
Eating and Drinking Our Way Through Spring
Canberrans love their local food scene, and the festival organisers have clearly been paying attention. The food and beverage program will expand beyond the usual festival favourites, with a stronger focus on local producers, boutique makers and hands-on experiences.
“We’re really excited about how the festival is evolving this year, particularly when it comes to showcasing our incredible local food and beverage scene,” Ross says. “Guests can expect an expanded lineup of local producers, artisan vendors, and hospitality experiences throughout the program.”
Even better, the festival will once again extend beyond Commonwealth Park. The “Floriade About Town” program is returning, with local cafés, bars and restaurants across Canberra set to serve up flower-themed menu items and specials during the festival.
According to Ross, this is all about “spreading the joy of Floriade through the city and driving economic activity,” making sure the festival vibe reaches every corner of the ACT.
NightFest and the Crowd Favourites
For those who prefer their blooms after dark, NightFest is locked in from Thursday 1 October to Sunday 4 October, running from 6:30pm to 10:30pm.
“NightFest is set to return in 2026 bigger and brighter than ever,” Ross teases. “Commonwealth Park will transform into a vibrant after-dark playground filled with light, colour and energy.”
Expect glowing garden beds, live music, and roving performers scattered across the lawns. And yes, the crowd favourites are back on the schedule.
Dogs’ Day Out will take over the park on the final Sunday, 11 October, giving visitors the chance to wander the flower beds with their four-legged best friend.
The following morning, Monday 12 October, the Great Big Bulb Dig returns. For $20, you can grab a bag and dig up your own piece of the Floriade display to plant in your own garden, with all proceeds going directly to the YWCA.
It might be freezing outside today, but we’re already counting the days until puffer jackets make way for spring sunshine.
