The crew behind Molly are set to take Canberra back to the future, with a unique venture that makes the golden age of the 1980s new again.

Fans of Canberra’s bar scene may be lamenting the recent announcement that prohibition-themed Molly will be closing its doors this week. But never fear, the crew behind Molly, and other themed bars Black Market and The Highball Express, have a new venture set to take its place – 88mph.

With its Back To The Future-inspired name (remember how fast the DeLorean went?) you can probably guess the theme for this new bar. Tucked away in a Hobart Place basement, walking into 88mph will transport you back to the ‘80s.

Decked out with arcade games, pinball machines and neon lights galore, the team at Lala Hospitality Group have continued their run of amazing themed venues. In the back, space has been made for a massive LED dancefloor, great for recreating classic scenes from Dirty Dancing.

Perhaps the most exciting feature to this new venue is the three private karaoke rooms, located at the back of the bar. With a catalogue that consists purely of ‘80s tunes, these rooms will be perfect for busting out your best rendition of Careless Whisper or Like a Prayer. The largest room accommodates up to 22 people, so whether you’re with a group of friends or a work Christmas party, there’s plenty of room to move.

88mph boasts an impressive list of cocktails, all served on tap to make for super quick service. There’s the classic Cosmopolitan and Blue Lagoon, as well as some more unique options (to be announced soon). The pizza kitchen will also be fired up to serve fresh slices to go with your cocktail or beer.

88mph is set to open mid-October, at 8-10 Hobart Place, City West. For updates, you can sign up to their mailing list at 88mph.bar, or check out their Facebook page here.
