First dates are a lot like job interviews: good impressions count, awkwardness is inevitable and outcomes are mostly unpredictable. In saying this, there are a few things you can do to help you along.

Firstly, get the location right, and you’re half way there. For me, the best places to have a first date are ones that allow you to have a conversation and not have to shout to be heard. At the same time you need enough atmosphere so that you don’t feel like you have to talk all the time.

Everyone’s idea of a classic first date is some variation of dinner-and-a-movie. While there’s nothing wrong with this strategy, there are so many other fun and interesting places in Canberra that would make great places for a first date. Here are my five picks:

Parlour Wine Room
In 2011, a fire engulfed both Parlour Wine Room and neighbouring restaurant, Flint. While Flint re-located to Murrumbateman, Parlour Wine Room re-opened its doors in late-2013 and has been thriving ever since. Located in the NewActon precinct, Parlour is truly unique, boasting an award-winning wine list, friendly and professional staff, and delicious food. On Friday’s and Saturday’s Parlour is open from 12.00pm until late, making it the perfect place to get to know someone over bottle of wine and some tasty Spanish tapas.

Floriade Nightfest
There’s plenty to see and do at Floriade Nightfest, meaning that you will never find yourself at a lost for something to talk about. This festival, running every evening from the 24 – 28 September is one of the highlights of the Canberra year.

Why not take a stroll through the light parade, have a drink at the Glow Bar, or admire the flower displays from above in the Ferris Wheel? All perfect activities for a first date, made infinitely better by the fact that you’re under the stars.

Beyond Q
Beyond Q is not just your run-of-the-mill second hand bookshop. Located in Curtin, it is also a café and live music venue, making it a great place for a first date that’s a little on the quirky side. On most weekend afternoons some of the local musical talent is showcased and if you visit the website beforehand, you can hear a sample of what will be played.

Chocolateria San Churro
Every time I happen to drive past San Churro, located in the Bonner Court area of Woden Town Centre, it is bustling with activity. The friendly staff, gorgeous décor, and deep-fried doughnut goodness all make San Churro a fabulous place to get to know someone new.

I recommend getting a ‘Churros for Two’ platter, which comes with six churros and your choice of two dipping sauces – perfect for lots of playful snacking with your date. San Churros is open until 10.00pm on weeknights and midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Their coffee is Fair Trade, organic and award-winning – definitely worth giving a go.

Glebe Park
Spring is almost upon us in Canberra, and one place which is sure to come alive within the next few months is the iconic Glebe Park. Found on the eastern side of the Civic Centre, Glebe Park would make an ideal place to meet for a day-time date. Personally, I would visit the Jazz Apple Café for some coffee and cupcakes before taking a stroll along the endless tree-lined paths. Alternatively, you could pack a picnic-basket to enjoy in one of the many designated spots within the park.

And there you have it! Five great places for a first date in Canberra. Now, how to decide what to wear?
