If you’re searching for something fun, family-friendly, and totally unique this holiday season, the National Zoo & Aquarium is where you need to be. From now until February 1, the zoo is transforming into a vibrant summer hotspot packed with activities, entertainment, and wildlife experiences. 

It’s a full-blown summer festival! Picture yourself strolling through lush gardens, enjoying live music, sipping on a refreshing slushie, and indulging in wagyu burgers that are out of this world. Kids will be laughing and playing lawn games, while animal lovers get up close with fascinating creatures during themed keeper talks. 

The best part? Every week brings something new. Whether you’re planning a big day out with the family or a spontaneous summer escape, the zoo’s rotating program means there’s always a reason to come back. 

So, what’s happening from January 14th onwards? Here’s a taste of the fun: 

  • Colouring Contests & Treasure Hunts – Get creative and adventurous! Collect your materials when you arrive and enter for a chance to win amazing prizes, including animal encounters. 
  • Hayrides – Take a scenic ride through the zoo (available most days except Fridays) and soak up the summer vibes. 
  • Porcupine Week (Jan 12–18th) – Celebrate Louie the porcupine with special keeper talks and enrichment activities. 
  • Jazz Quartet (Jan 17th & 18th) – Nothing says summer like smooth tunes in the sunshine! Enjoy live jazz from 12–2 pm. 
  • Roaming Dinosaurs (Jan 16th & 17th) – Head to the Extinction Trail from 1–2 pm to meet these prehistoric giants! 
  • Ice Cream in the Park (Jan 17th & 18th) – Cool down with artisan ice cream while relaxing in the Viewing Park. 
  • Silent Disco (Jan 24th & 25th) – Pop on a headset and dance like nobody’s watching! Two sessions daily: 9:30–11 am & 2–4 pm. 
  • Movies in the Park (Jan 24th & 25th) – Kick back and enjoy family-friendly films on the big screen all day long. 
  • Zebra Week (Jan 19th–25th) – Celebrate our striped friends with collectable medallions and special keeper talks. 
  • Aussie Animal Keeper Talks (Jan 23th–25th) – Learn all about Australia’s iconic wildlife in fun, interactive sessions. 
  • Mascot Meet & Greets (Jan 23th–25th) – Say hello to the zoo mascots in the Viewing Park from 1–2 pm! 
  • Wagyu Specials & Summer Treats – Indulge in the best burgers and sausages you’ve ever had, plus refreshing slushies and ice cream. 
  • Member Extended Hours (Jan 31st & Feb 1st) – Zoo members can enjoy late-night access until 6 pm! 

With so much happening, the National Zoo & Aquarium is the perfect summer destination for locals and visitors alike. Most activities are included with general admission and FREE for zoo members (excluding food and beverage specials).
