Onred Restaurant

[1 right]Walter Burley and Marion Griffin had it all worked out. The Canberra layout is one that truly reveals itself from above. With this in mind, where better to appreciate the work of these American geniuses than at Onred Restaurant, located on the top floor of Canberra’s iconic Red Hill lookout? Since taking over the restaurant in 2007, brother and sister owners, Ben (floor) and Jodie (chef), have worked to deliver the winning combination of food, service and, of course, that amazing view. Ben and Jodie are proud proponents of Canberra – it’s hard to imagine otherwise when you get to admire that view everyday – and pride themselves on supporting the city and culture. In fact, the commitment to ‘local’ carries right through, with the tableware supplied by the internationally acclaimed Bison of Pialligo, and their Poplar range of vases and pots are present throughout the dining space. The dazzling menu is based around sampling flavours more than the traditional entrée/main/dessert-style of a la carte that is traditionally available. On Red recommends around five courses to get the full experience, however guests are welcome to order as few as three. [2 left]A range of sharing plates offers some flavours that aren’t found within the ‘Individual’ menu and, cleverly, can be scaled up depending on the number of people looking to partake in the communal experience. The intriguing and playful wine menu is well organised, with separate offerings for the main part of the meal and dessert. In the main menu, Canberra varieties are presented from the very first page – reinforcing the commitment to the region through more than a stunning view. There’s also a serious commitment to the unique and unusual throughout the list, with some stunning examples sourced from South America and Europe among the many from regional Australia. Head up to Onred Restaurant to take in the sights of Canberra, as well as the delicious flavours and friendly service from Ben, Jodie and the team.
